The unknown is tantalizing for the curious designer, who begins artistic creations with an unclear idea of what finally may result. My experimentation with chance is evident in Lightype, which embraces the chance movements of the hand combined with various light tools. Darkness was the canvas and flashlight became paintbrush. The typographer stood in total darkness in front of the camera while the photographer counted and documented the actions. Swooping hand movements formed letters in the air, seen to the naked eye as a single beam of moving light. A camera with long shutter speeds of five to fifteen seconds captured every movement of a singular light beam in air. Video recordings and camera stills illustrated the process and development of Lightype. Various types of light were used including neon tubing, led, and incandescent. Lightype is only motion, no mess, no tangible result, except preservation through photography.
