My entropic experimentation began with water as ice in Ice-o-Type. Ice letters were created from water frozen in alphabet molds. Each letter had unique crystalline formations on the interior of the four-inch by three and a quarter-inch contours, varying from letter to letter. The ice was removed from the mold and placed on a flat surface at room temperature. Immediately the letter-cubes began to glisten as the air warmed the frozen letters. Letters were set individually and combined in ironic verbal arrangements. The ice-letters illustrate type as object. Although temporary at room temperature, ice-letters can be experienced and set just like lead type. These movable letters have a common origin but a very different end; the ice letters will eventually puddle and evaporate. To record the shift from solid to liquid and create type as image, I set up a time-lapse photographic capture. The camera was placed over the letters and set to record an image every thirty seconds for the entirety of the melting process. Each ice-letter took about one and a half hours to liquefy. Once the ice-letters transitioned to a liquid, crisp edges and flat surfaces became gracefully rounded and surrounded by a halo until fluid puddles replaced solid letters. To portray the enchanting melting process, not visible in a short period of time, I created a movie. The undulating puddles and unexpected floating icebergs were a delight to discover and even more fun to create. |
