Each domino object was created from twenty or more standing dominoes fashioned in the shape of a roman character. White dominoes were placed on a wooden surface. Rounded letter contours were necessary to facilitate the continuous crashing of the dominoes. The tipping of an initial domino resulted in delightful scatters and colorful dots reminiscent of clear standing letterforms and was enhanced by audible clacks. The resultant flat dominoes created overlapping lines and disparate curves, yet hearkening the initial domino sculptures. Time-lapse photography was utilized to record the falling dominoes. Each letter took only seconds to fall, and stills were captured at fractions of a second. Also, a short movie captured the dynamic distributions of dominoes as a hand toppled the strings of units, which would have otherwise remained standing. Dominoes embraces the childlike joy of play while exploring the remnants of initially legible letterforms and resultant scatter patterns. |
