Candle Type explores the chance action and results of fire. This series began with the melting of wax. Liquid wax was poured into letter molds. When the wax was semi-solid, wicks were placed down the stems of the letters. Once cooled and solid, letters were removed from the mold and set up for burning. Each wax letter was lit by the wick. The bright flame slowly moved down the wick, melting more and more wax, shifting the form of the letters. To record the melting, I photographed the candles through time-lapse photography, capturing a still every second for the duration of the few minutes burn.
