The alphabet and typography are vital parts of communication. Twenty-six letters combined in various ways communicate. But what about making the letters themselves sing? The creation of fine art and design often employ process as a path to inventive experiments. Thus, explorations in studio art processes rooted in science theory, including chance, entropy, and contingency, as manifested in letterform creation, may produce fresh graphic design tools. I suggest activating chaotic processes to offer opportunities for experimental typeface design.
Singular artistic idea can enable designers to explore the multiplicity of typographic form and communication. Processes can become just as important as final design solutions. With a study of the progression of typographic object, image, and tool, a more holistic process may reward artistic creation and design communication. Through chaotic experiments I illustrate the utility of natural chaotic processes in typeface design; these processes can engage designers and excite innovation, ultimately presenting unique letterforms for creative design. |
